The experience of completing and submitting the 2020 W-4 in TiM will not be all that much different than that of previous years' W-4s. For example, just like in the past, an employee's tax information can be stored in their TiM Profile and the W-4 will still appear as part of their Startwork packet (if the employer has included one).
The biggest difference is that we've added a specific step for an employee to reviewing their W-4 information before continuing into their Startwork packet. We call this step the W-4 viewer.
The TiM W-4 viewer displays the document itself, along with accompanying worksheets, allowing an employee to enter information directly onto the document. This provides them the exact information and instructions provided by the IRS at the time they’re completing it.
The first time an employee interacts with a 2020 W-4 in TiM, TiM will guide them through each field of the form. They will be required to either enter information in a field or actively skip to the next field.
The Allowances Worksheets are available to the employee while they review their 2020 W-4. When a W-4 is submitted, production will not receive the worksheet pages (typically worksheets are only retained by the employee for their records and not submitted to employers), and the employee will be able to access their worksheets from their TiM Profile at any time.
Once a 2020 W-4 is completed by a TiM user the first time, they can choose to save the information in their Profile so they don’t need to fill out from scratch ever again! The next time they are prompted to submit Startwork in TiM, they will have the opportunity to review their saved W-4 information and make changes if necessary, or just submit the form as it was previously completed.
