For more information about Form I-9, TiM encourages you to visit the USCIS website. The USCIS holds Form I-9 verification info & training sessions regularly. Click here for more info.
A Form I-9 is completed in two steps:
- The employee completes Section 1 (described in this article).
- According to the USCIS, an employee must complete Section 1 "On their first day of employment ... or Before their first day of hire, if you have offered the individual a job and if they have accepted the offer."
- An employer or an employer-authorized representative completes Section 2.
- This second step is called the verification step (click here for info about completing Section 2).
- According to the USCIS, Section 2 must be completed "within 3 business days of the date of hire of their employee (the hire date means the first day of work for pay)."
Completing Section 1 in TiM:
In TiM, you will see two screens before being presented with the I-9 itself:
First, you are prompted to review and accept your Employment Details.
To accept your Employment Details, click "Accept & Continue to Startwork."
The next screen is the Personal Information Entry Screen.
You will be prompted to enter your Social Security Number, review your W-4 information, and, if you want to opt into Direct Deposit, your bank information.
NOTE: TiM does not store Social Security Numbers or other sensitive information in our database long term. Therefore, you will be prompted to enter your Social Security Number each time you submit Startwork through TiM.
You will also choose which ID document(s) you will bring on your first day of work, to allow an 'employer-authorized representative' to verify your I-9 and complete Section 2 of Form I-9.
Pro Tip: Don't worry too much about making the "right" selection. If you choose Passport, but end up bringing your Drivers License and Social Security Card, that's totally fine and will not hinder your verification later.
Once your Personal Information is completed, click "Continue to Startwork".
You will next be presented with the Form I-9 Section 1.
Per USCIS regulations, Section 1 of Form I-9 cannot be pre-populated in any way. However, TiM does want to make it as easy as possible for employees to submit this form, so TiM will suggest information to you as you move along.
Start by clicking into your last name field.
You will see that your last name, first name, middle initial, and other last names used are suggested to you. Click the suggested information to apply it.
Move into the Address field and begin typing your address.
TiM suggests the rest of the line again. Continue to complete your personal information in this manner.
Next, select your citizenship status from the available checkboxes, highlighted in red.
Almost done! Select the date.
NOTE: The date that should be entered here is today's date, ie: the date that you are signing and submitting this form!
Finally, you will see a signature field that reads, "Sign Here." Click to complete the form.
A pop-up will appear that contains a statement of attestation.
Select the checkbox and then click the orange "Sign & Submit this Form I-9" button.
NOTE: You will not see your signature populate; the pop-up will appear immediately. This is expected!
TiM will take a moment to confirm your I-9 is completed properly and then submit the form.
IMPORTANT NOTE: After submitting your I-9, TiM will direct you to submit the rest of your Startwork packet.
For detailed instructions, begin at Step 7 of: How to complete & submit Startwork in TIM
Once your Startwork is completely submitted, TiM will remind you to present your ID documents on your first day of work, and provide a list of people on the Project who are able to verify your I-9.
Be sure to find one of those kind folks on your first day of work, and ask them to verify your I-9!
